02Your result

What your detailing cost estimate means

Professional prices come as a range, because the same service costs more on a large or neglected car.

  1. 01

    Professional cost per year

The typical price range for the service you picked, multiplied by how often you want it.

  2. 02

    DIY, first year

The starter kit plus the products you use up. The kit is bought once, so later years cost far less.

  3. 03

    What you save

The gap between the two, shown as a range. Enter a value for your time to see whether it still pays.

What to do next

  • Build the kit

What a home detailing kit needs, and what you can leave on the shelf.

    Detailing kit
  • Compare protection

Wax, sealant and ceramic coating side by side, with how long each lasts.

    Paint protection
  • Check a tint before you book

Work out the net shade of a window film against your state’s limit.

03How it works

How the detailing cost estimate is calculated

Two sums, set side by side: what a professional charges over a year, and what your own supplies and time cost.

Paying a professional
Pro = price per visit × visits a year

Professional cost per year = price per visit × visits a year (worked for the low and the high end of the range)

Doing it yourself
DIY = kit + supplies + hours × value of time

DIY, year one = starter kit + yearly supplies + (hours per session × sessions × value of an hour). Saving = Pro − DIY

From the second year on, the starter kit drops out of the sum.

What each term means

price per visit
The typical professional price range for the service, from J.D. Power or AAA.
kit
Equipment you buy once: buckets, wash mitt, towels, polish and protection.
supplies
Products you use up and replace each year.
value of time
What an hour of your time is worth to you. Leave it at zero to ignore it.

What the tool assumes

  • Typical national price ranges. Prices vary by region, vehicle size and the car’s condition.
  • The DIY figures are the ones you enter. The estimator does not price products for you.
  • A ceramic coating needs the paint corrected first, which adds work or cost.
  • The result of DIY work depends on your technique and the time you give it.

04Worked example

Detailing cost example: a full detail twice a year

A full interior and exterior detail twice a year, against doing it yourself with a $150 starter kit and $40 of products a year.

  1. 01

    Price one professional detail

    Typical range, J.D. Power

    $150–$500

  2. 02

    Multiply by two visits

    $150 × 2 and $500 × 2

    $300–$1,000

  3. 03

Add up the DIY first year

    $150 starter kit + $40 of products

    $190

  4. 04

    Find the first-year saving

    $300–$1,000 − $190

    $110–$810

  5. 05

Find the saving in later years

    $300–$1,000 − $40

    $260–$960

Professional cost per year

$300–$1,000

Doing it yourself costs $190 in the first year and about $40 a year after that, in exchange for most of a day each time.

05Background

What car detailing costs, and why prices vary

Detailing covers everything from a quick wash and wax to a full interior and exterior treatment with paint correction. The published price ranges are wide for that reason.

Typical professional detailing prices
ServiceTypical priceSource
Basic wash and wax$50 to $100J.D. Power
Full interior and exterior detail$150 to $500J.D. Power
Professional ceramic coating$500 to $2,000AAA
Prices vary by region, by the size of the vehicle and by its condition.

The size and condition of the vehicle move the price most. A large SUV with pet hair and stained carpets takes far longer than a tidy hatchback, and a detailer prices the hours.

Doing it yourself changes the sum from money to time. The equipment lasts for many washes, so the cost per detail falls quickly, but the first full detail takes most of a day. See the cost section of the detailing guide for what each route involves.

06When to use it

When to use a detailing cost estimator

Before you book a detailer, or before you fill a basket with products.

  • To check a quote

See whether a detailer’s price sits inside the typical range.

  • DIY or professional

Find out how many details it takes for a home kit to pay for itself.

  • To budget for a year

Decide how often you can afford the service you want.

  • Before selling a car

Weigh the cost of a pre-sale detail against the price you hope to get.

Mistakes to avoid.

  • Comparing quotes for different services as if they were the same job.
  • Counting the starter kit every year. You buy it once.
  • Valuing your own time at zero and then resenting the day it takes.
  • Booking a ceramic coating without asking whether paint correction is included.

08Questions

Detailing Cost Estimator: your questions.

How much does it cost to detail a car?

A full interior and exterior detail typically costs $150 to $500, depending on the size and condition of the vehicle, according to J.D. Power. A basic wash and wax is typically $50 to $100.

How much does a ceramic coating cost?

A professional ceramic coating typically costs $500 to $2,000, according to AAA. The price usually reflects the paint preparation as much as the coating.

Is it cheaper to detail a car yourself?

In money, yes. The equipment lasts for many washes, so the cost per detail falls after the first one. The trade is your time: a first full detail takes most of a day.

How often should a car be detailed?

There is no fixed rule. It depends on how the car is used, where it is parked and how you want it to look. Enter the frequency you have in mind to see the yearly cost.

Why do detailing prices vary so much?

Because the work varies. Vehicle size, the condition of the paint and interior, and the services included all change the hours involved, and detailers charge for the hours.
